BACKSPACE is an interactive digital time machine that lets you explore how the internet evolved from the early web to today. You pick a year, and the entire experience transforms around it—UI, typography, layouts, interactions, technology, culture, and even the way websites felt. The goal is to make the history of the internet something you can experience, not just read about.

The Social Stream & Mobile Web Awakening — 2010

Day 4 takes BACKSPACE into 2010 — the era when the web became more social, mobile, interactive, and touch-first.

I recreated the experience with a period-inspired Google Chrome 8 browser, featuring interactive versions of Twitter, Facebook & FarmVille, Angry Birds, Instagram, and an HTML5 vs Flash showcase.

  • 🐦 Dual-pane Twitter with 140-character composer & Fail Whale
  • 🚜 Facebook Wall + interactive FarmVille
  • 🏹 Angry Birds-style HTML5 canvas physics
  • 📸 Instagram-inspired vintage filters & photostream
  • ⚡ Interactive Flash vs HTML5 experience
  • 📱 Responsive Web Design multi-device sandbox
  • 🔊 Custom Web Audio API sound effects

Built with React + TypeScript + Vite.

2010 was when the web started becoming the web we know today.

🌐 BACKSPACE — Devlog #03 | Day 3/30

The Web 2.0 Revolution — 2005

Day 3 takes BACKSPACE into 2005, the era when the web transformed from static pages into an interactive, social playground.

I recreated the early Web 2.0 experience with a period-inspired Firefox 1.5 browser, interactive versions of Digg, MySpace, YouTube, Thefacebook, Google Maps, Flickr, and Google Reader, along with draggable maps, Top 8 profiles, AJAX-style interactions, RSS feeds, classic ratings, glossy Web 2.0 UI, and custom Web Audio API sound effects.

  • 7 interactive web experiences
  • ~3,900+ lines of TypeScript/TSX
  • Custom procedural audio effects
  • Period-inspired UI and interactions

Built with React + TypeScript + Vite.

From static HTML to the social web — 2005 changed everything.

🔮 Next: Day 4 — 2010, the Mobile & Social Web.

Revisit the web. One era at a time.

🚀 BACKSPACE — Devlog #1
Built the first version of BACKSPACE, an interactive time machine for the internet. The idea is simple: pick an era from 1995 → 2026 → Future and experience how the web evolved through changing UI, typography, layouts, and design styles. Day 1 focused on the core timeline, era system, dynamic themes, and the first 1995 Web 1.0 experience. Next up: going deeper into each era and making the time-travel experience feel much more alive.
