creating my personal website

  • 7 Devlogs

first time building an actual webpage using HTML, CSS, and JS! experimenting with tools and learning web design :)

Ship #2

I made “alyah’s cafe”, my own website/digital portfolio with a cafe-themed aspect and creatives that I thought embodied who I was.

this was my first ever website, and I used building it as a learning opportunity to use human made open source documentation and strive away from AI and vibecoding.

I came across numerous bugs and issues throughout the 16 hours I’ve spent so far, but each has also taught me more and more about the basics of web design (learn from ur mistakes!). for something I started when I barely knew anything, i’ve come so far. I hope to continue developing more sections, adding more interactive details (aquarium coming soon!) and using more advanced javascript.

final devlog of v2 before my first official ship :)

i added a few new features and “easter eggs”! the stars around the page are draggable and you can place them anywhere like stickers.
the “welcome to alyah’s cafe” text shows a typing animating when you first enter the website. i’ve also customized the scrollbar and cursors.

also a few major bugfixes:

  • navbar section detection was not working at all and taking you to random places
  • mobile display! everything has been formated @media so those on phones can see all content properly formatted as well
  • theres more trust i forgot tho

superr proud of how this is coming along as I started this with zero webdev experience and wow we’ve come a long way. no vibecoding as well so everything is HUMAN.

everything is accessible at https://alyahli.ca (yay got a domain!) :D

woah it’s been a while! i’ve been working on the formatting of my projects section, as I wanted the cards to be flexible in positioning and be able to stack on top of each other or fit in a row depending on the screen size.

nearly everything is now exactly the same as I envisioned in figma, except for three images of stars and mobile viewing. after completing this in my next devlog, alyah’s cafe v2 will be completed!

stay tuned for updates in the very near future, as I will be working on a public aquarium feature where everyone can draw and add a fish :)
and as always, please add a comment if you encounter any bugs!

added more figma elements! my somewhat outdated receiptify and some stars are now on the website. aaanddd live section detection highlighted on the navbar.
as usual, the page is accesible at: https://lyri3aly.github.io/alyahs-cafe/ if you want to check it out!
however, I did order the 11$ domain grant so after that finishes pending I will change the link
if there are any bugs or incompatibilities on screen sizes- many, at the moment, please let me know!
(p.s. new vsc update looks great)

i’m really proud of how this first draft came out. really excited for people to actually be able to use and view my website from an actual link!
i have many more ideas for the future, outside of just finishing the design and adding more content. i’ve learned a lot about html and css from coding this current version, so i’m hoping to expand on that using my creative skills but also use more javascript.
follow along :)

phase and draft 1 of my website complete! instead of copying everything I designed on figma all at once, I’ve decided to take it step by step.
after a long vacation, i’m finally back and i’ve written all the content using html. i’m hoping to ship this version first so that I actually have a usable website.

designs and other content will come soon!

just spent an hour or two (lapse glitched and isn’t showing the other 1h 30min) on Figma for my new official design of version 1 of my own personal website! and things are looking good!
I like this design more than my previous one and i’m so excited to recreate this with code soon :)

i’ve been experimenting more with images, banners, and navigation bars before deciding that I do not like the theme I had going on. i’ve switched to a different colour palette and stripped down my website! not happy about restarting everything but I’m hoping new design will resonate and look much better.
