Devlog #18 - Drivetrain System/Day-6: Man oh man; the urge to flip my table over right at this moment. Anyways I spent 3 HOURS on ONE single part of a build, and it’s still not even working how I want to. Here’s the flaws: both of the axles are connected when I spin the right wheel, BUT they are spinning in the opposite direction. Second, when I spin the left; it don’t work! Now I have to figure out what the right side has that the left side doesn’t. And lastly, this thing has so many parts, that the time I move a part until it actually shows, it makes it look like its running below 1 FPS…. Though I did manage to get past the roadblock of the gears constantly colliding with each other, but my guess is it will probably come back once I keep trying to tweak these mechanics.
Devlog #17 - Drivetrain System/Day-5: Today, I was able to put my knowledge that I learned about gear relation into my work! I am super happy because now the gears can definitely spin together and work together just like how a differential does. I also took some time to assemble the other side of the chassis so everything can flow smoothly from here. I’m doing a little bit of troubleshooting from where I placed my mates because I kind of did them wrong and some were causing some problems. Most of it is fixed up and working just like how it should. I also redesigned the axle shaft housing just for the other side; now symmetric with the first side.
Devlog #16 - Drivetrain System/Day-4: Light day today, didn’t do much because I was a little bit busy today but that’s alright! I luckily found out and learned how to make the differential gears turn in unison, but now I run into another problem; connectors. I cannot really find a way where everything can function properly because of collision problems. For example, one of my parts is spinning, and the other part that is supposed to be connected to it, doesn’t; causing them to collide instead of turning together…
Devlog #15 - Drivetrain System/Day-3: Today, I was able to make two parts, assemble a couple things, and troubleshooted some more. What I made specifically was the spider gear, and the cross pin shaft. Right now it looks a little bit rough because I am still scaling everything to fit, but once it’s done, I think it will look really good. I’m at a bit of a standstill right now cause of having trouble with linking the gears together, so they can all work in unison; I worked on assembling the other side of the chassis as I took a break from the differential a little bit. I might not do much next session, except assemble the parts I made, animate them, unify them, and make them look great!
Devlog #14 - Drivetrain System/Day-2: Today, I was able to make two parts; the side differential gear and the ring gear. Honestly I had a lot of trouble with this section, one being them error codes.. I kept trying over and over to find what was wrong about what I was doing; it for sure burnt up most of my time today. I realized I kind of had to make a more straight teeth on the gears, rather than the slanted fancy design I wanted to make because it was just not at my level. Though I was pretty happy on how the parts turned out and fit together, since everything needs to be near perfect for them to work in unison. The next thing that I will probably be making is the spider gear, and all the other minor parts around it.
Devlog #13 - Drivetrain System/Day-1: With the very start of making this section, today I built the rear differential cover, the u joint (universal joint), and the pinion shaft, all part of the main rear differential system. I went ahead and started working on this section rather than making the other track bars and all that stuff, because I kind of wanted a “reference” to build on, (aka a better picture of where the other parts were gonna go). I think about the hardest part about today was kind of planning how to do this. To me, differentials look like a huge mess to look at; I was super confused on how even the gears connected and worked with each other. I definitely am making it harder for myself by building the internals too rather than just the externals, but hey; I guess I really want a challenge!
Devlog #12 - Suspension System/Day-8: Today I focused on tweaking some of the errors I made while building this section, and was able to start making some of the rods that link the wheels to the suspension system and frame (lower, upper, track). One such thing that I had to tweak for my car chassis project is my shock absorber mounting bracket. I realized that it was way too small to fit onto the axle housing, so I made it bigger. To sum up what with I did with everything here, I basically scaled everything down so the parts don’t collide with each other. For the brakes that I had trouble with, I decided to just fix it in space so it wouldn’t move. I think the hardest part about today is keeping everything working; to making the wheel assembly spin and work nicely, to making the shock absorber a functional pneumatic system. I’m very happy about my progress for today.
Devlog #11 - Suspension System/Day-7: Today was mostly just a chill day, and I spent most of my time attaching the parts I made throughout this project into one functioning part that basically works together. The thing that I am having trouble on right now is the attachment between the brake assembly and the whole thing. I just can’t find a way to make it not spin with the brake disk, but I think eventually I’ll figure it out…
Devlog #10 - Suspension System/Day-6: Today, I was able to make and assemble together a working shock absorber! (yes the piston moves back and forth) I also made a bracket that goes along with it (blue object) to mount the absorber to the axle shaft housing. I think the hardest part about making this was merging the parts together. Because I made this into many separate parts, it looked very unorganized at times, and I was even confused while picking out the parts one by one at times. I managed to merge some and make things a little bit easier in the end. I think I might be making the control arms next to complete the suspension system… (?)
Devlog #9 - Suspension System/Day-5: Today I was able to make the individual springs including the spring pads of the suspension system. I think what was hard for me today was attaching the parts together, because there isn’t really a clear spot on where to put the parts, so I tried to make it on my own and snap connected them/grouped them together. The next thing that I will most likely be making is the control arms; or the shock absorber. From there it’s just a matter of making the differential, and the rest of the frame; completing my first ever “hard” project!
Devlog #8 - Suspension System/Day-4: Today I was able to lock in and finish some stuff! I finally finished and added the final touches of the axle shaft housing, and was able to get started on the individual suspension springs on top of the axle shaft system. I think the hardest part about making this section is probably thinking how you are gonna pull this off, because there are instances where the shape is kind of weird and it’s a challenge to make. Making sure all the measurements of the parts are right and have “chemistry” between them is another. I’m planning to work on this section for a few more days, so lets hope for the best…
Devlog #7 - Suspension System/Day-3: Hi guys do you miss me hahahah no alright; okay anyways I made a few adjustments to my very cool project, such as changing the shape (filet) of my wheels to make it look actually nice now. And the other things that I managed to do today was reorient where my axle shaft was placed. Last time it was facing the wrong way, so I fixed it up and also changed the structure of it to be less complicated! Most of the work today was finding out how I am going to go on from here, and how to connect all of this to the drivetrain where everything will work in one piece. I also managed to start on the outer axle holding (the cover that goes on the axle shaft). I’m kind of slacking once again, but i’ll try my best!
Devlog #6 - Suspension System/Day-2: I managed to finish up the axle shaft and the flange. I honestly think it came it pretty well; I am aiming to make a solid axle suspension. I also don’t really know where to go on from here, because the differential is also a little bit confusing and a burden to think and make of. I might add some shock absorbers and then move on to the drivetrain system. That’s how the plan might look so far in this project.
Devlog #5 - Suspension System/Day-1: I lazied out a little bit today, decided to take a little break and just work on the axle shaft and measuring it out a little bit, so it can fit smoothly as I go along making it. As always i’ll keep working on building the entire suspension assembly over a couple days to a week.
Devlog #4 - Brake Assembly/Day-2: Today, I was able to (somewhat) finish the parts that belong to the entire brake assembly. The next part that I will most likely be replicating is the hydraulic sytem for the brakes (or I might just move onto the suspension system). I think the hardest part about building this section is finding the right measurements. Most of my work today was just trying to find out how long, thick, and tall things were going to be and how it was going to fit rather than building. I still haven’t chamfered or fileted the parts yet to make it look good, because I want to avoid any problems that would come up if I did. So far everything is coming in nice according to plan!
Devlog #3 - Brake Assembly/Day-1: Today I was able to start making the parts that go along with the brake assembly, such as the brake caliper, the brake disk, and the brake pads. Although I am dissapointed that I couldn’t finish with my limited time today, I think I did okay considering I don’t really have experience doing this. The hardest part about this section is definitely replicating all the curves, patterns, and extrudes because it requires you to think how it could be done the right way (the error messages were a little depressing sometimes too to look at). I will for sure go on to finish this maybe sometime soon!
Devlog #2 - Wheel Hub: I’m super happy that my recording worked for this build session now! Anyways, today’s build focused on the hub of the wheel; personally I think this part was pretty difficult to make, and also it very much felt like a learning experience since I kind of blanked out on so many parts of the build. The one part I had the most struggle was with the patterning tool, because I kept getting confused on where I was supposed to click on the part, so it made quite a bit of mess for me to fix over and over again. I also had some trouble with merging my parts because there was once like 70 of them and I got so confused. Satisfied how it turned out at the very least!
Devlog #1 - Car Wheel: Apparently the stupid RECORDING didn’t even capture my build, but we’ll make the best of it. I think from now on I am going to do the screen recording thing, because I just tested it and it worked way better than the lookout app. To start off with this very hard project (as a newbie who is new to 3D Modeling), i sketched a circle, and extruded it to make the small cylinder thingy, then I sketched more of those circles and remove-extruded them to put the details into the wheel itself. I think the most hardest part about this build is the fact that this part isn’t even centered to begin with (I eventually figured out how to put it back on the origin). For the details on the tire I sketched it and revolved it around to make the black circle thing, and I drew arrows for my tread choice, and put it though a circular pattern so it could be all around the tire. Then for the very last final touches I filet/chamfered the rough edges of the rim to make it look a little bit more neat. I’m pretty excited to see where this project goes and where it will advance!
