Bodywork & Front Drive Module Development (6/26/2026)

For this sessions, I extended my bodywork from the drivetrain into the electronics housing. I decided to have the speed controller and battery be located in the middle so that the car is stable and balanced. The ESC will be on the opposite side of the motor to try and balance out the weigh difference. I added more M3 Insert holes into the body so its easy to disassemble and it wont fly off when driving. I considered a AWD model but that would require making a universal joint with a differential that would be incredibly difficult to 3D print. This is also the reason that I decided that the drive wheels will not have a suspension system as there axle would be forced to bend with the suspensions system without a universal joint. I decided to take inspiration from F1 and crafted a double wishbone suspensions for my front wheels. The wheel hubs have a M3 going all the way through to allow for a steering linkage. The front suspension block is X braced as it is likely the spot where most collisions will happen during testing. For the next CAD session, I hope to use mesh tools to make a steering linkage and a servo hub and finally combine the entire car into one assembly.

Initial Drivetrain Development (6/23/2026)

I just started my first revisions for my 3D printed RC car. I just spent the last few hours on making the drivetrain. The gears will be fully 3D printed so I decided to use a STLGears.com to make my gears. After some testing, I noticed that the herringbone gear worked the best as it meshed well and dispersed the load better than other types. It took me a while to get the spacing right. The hardest part was meshing the axles together well and ensure that I could print them separately. I ended up reducing the gearing from the motor with a 12:35 and then a 13:33 to get the speeds I need of 40+ mph. I also decided on using M3 Brass Heat Set Inserts to connect all the pieces together.
