I made GlintX, a hands-free phone cleaning machine that uses microfiber rollers, cleaning fluid, and UV lights to clean the outside of a phone. The phone sits vertically in the center while two rollers move along its sides using threaded rods and motors. It works kinda like a car wash. It’s main function to clean surface level grime and dirt to make your phone squeaky clean! :)
The most challenging part was getting the mechanical system to work reliably. My original 3D-printed carriage broke twice the day before Open Sauce, so I redesigned it so that each roller had its own separate carriage. I also had to do a lot of wiring, debugging, and testing to get the motors, pump, and cleaning mechanism working together.
I’m most proud that I was able to take an idea from a rough concept to a working machine that I could actually demonstrate to people at Open Sauce in just a few weeks. Seeing 100+ people reacting to my project amused, surprised, and amazed was really rewarding to me.
If you want to test GlintX, place a phone vertically in the center of the machine and start the cleaning cycle. The rollers should move along both sides of the phone while the pump applies cleaning fluid. Please make sure the phone is secured properly before starting the cycle.
