Devlog 8 : Escape the Facility

Today, I reviewed and refined my project to make the code more genuinely my own and reduce unnecessary AI-generated elements. I finalized my updates, committed the changes to GitHub, and resubmitted my game for StarDance recertification.

It’s officially back in the review queue. Fingers crossed!

What did you make?
I made ESCAPE THE FACILITY, a sci-fi text adventure set in an abandoned lunar research facility. Players explore rooms, collect equipment, fight hostile robots, solve a computer-terminal riddle, and find the Emergency Access Keycard to escape. I built a Python version and a browser version using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

What was challenging?
The most challenging part was debugging the game’s logic and making sure exploration, inventory, combat, and progression worked correctly. Creating a browser version alongside the Python game was also challenging, especially learning how the different web technologies fit together.

What are you proud of?
I’m proud that I turned my idea into a working game with two playable versions. I wrote most of the main gameplay code in Python and JavaScript, tested both versions, and published the project on GitHub with a live browser demo.

What should people know so they can test your project?
The browser version can be played here:
https://mian-ismail-shahbaz-ali.github.io/escape-the-facility/

The source code and README are available here:
https://github.com/Mian-Ismail-Shahbaz-Ali/escape-the-facility

Players should explore the facility, manage their health and inventory, investigate the research areas, solve the riddle, defeat the security mech, obtain the keycard, and escape. Follow the in-game instructions to play.

Devlog 7 : Escape the Facility

Built ESCAPE THE FACILITY, a sci-fi text adventure set in an abandoned lunar research facility, for Hack Club StarDance.

The game features exploration, inventory management, combat, health and oxygen systems, surveillance recordings, and a riddle. I created two versions: one in Python and another for the browser using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

I tested both versions, confirmed they worked properly, and pushed the final code to GitHub.

This project helped me improve my programming, debugging, and testing skills while turning an idea into a working game.

Devlog 6 : Escape the Facility

Today, I spent time reviewing and improving the JavaScript version of my sci-fi text adventure. I worked through several fixes involving the pause menu, inventory, oxygen canisters, story text, and the Power Control Room.

I also reviewed the game’s different mechanics, including exploration, combat, the Security Mech fight, the Research Lab riddle, oxygen management, and the escape sequence. I made the necessary changes while keeping the existing gameplay intact.

After the fixes, I ran node –check game.js to check for JavaScript syntax errors, and it passed.

Next, I’ll test the game from start to finish, check for any remaining bugs, finalize the README, and prepare my project for submission to Hack Club StarDance.

Devlog 5 : Escape the Facility

Today, I polished the game’s item selection and inventory options, removing unnecessary choices to make the interface cleaner. I also reviewed the latest version of the code and identified a few final improvements to make tomorrow before wrapping up the project.

Getting closer to the finish line!

Devlog 4 : Escape the Facility

Today, I fixed an issue with the Inventory system by adding a Return button and ensuring the Oxygen Canister option works correctly. I tested three different scenarios, and all passed!

Next session, I’ll continue improving the game’s navigation, fix remaining bugs, test the different routes and mechanics, and work on polishing the overall gameplay experience.

Devlog 3 : Escape the Facility

Today, I worked on improving the browser version of Escape the Facility. I updated the Junction options, removed the option to return to the Airlock, and kept the Inventory button working as intended. I also fixed the Power Control Room progression so that restoring one system lets the player return to the Research Junction instead of being sent back to the main menu. After returning, the player can access the next progression options. I tested the changes and ran node –check game.js to confirm there were no syntax errors.
Next up: implementing the Security and Research sections.

Devlog 2 : Escape the Facility

Today, I continued developing ESCAPE THE FACILITY and worked on making it playable directly in a web browser using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I tested the browser version and fixed bugs in the survival and combat systems, including issues with health and oxygen checks. I also worked on improving the combat display and reducing duplicate stats in the story text.

Challenges: Debugging conditional logic and adapting my Python text adventure into a browser-based experience.

Next Steps: Continue testing the game, polish the interface, fix any remaining bugs, and push the latest changes to GitHub.

Devlog 1 : Escape the Facility

Hey everyone! This is my first devlog for my StarDance project, ESCAPE THE FACILITY. I haven’t posted any devlogs yet because I’ve mostly been focused on actually building the game. I’ve spent 9 hours and 55 minutes on it so far, and my goal is to reach 15 hours. It’s a Python text adventure set in an abandoned NASA lunar facility. So far, I’ve added exploration, combat, an inventory system, oxygen management, crew logs, puzzles, and a boss fight. Right now, I’m working on making the story flow better, fixing some bugs, and bringing the playtime closer to my 7.5-minute target. I’ll try to post updates more regularly from now on!
