A short WarioWare-style game about school

Ship #1 Pending review

What is SchoolWare?

SchoolWare is a short WarioWare-style puzzle game about school. You have to complete different tasks in a short amount of time that involve History, Prealgebra, or Biology.

What was challenging?

One thing I found challenging was getting the timing of the levels to work right. When you start a level, it first shows you how many lives you have, and which level you’re on. Then, that message disappears, and the timer for your task starts. I didn’t fully understand how Godot’s process modes and time scaling worked, but I was able to figure it out.

What am I proud of?

I think the theme of the game and the levels are unique and silly. I am proud of the player movement, because it feels very responsive and fun to play.

How can you test my project?

You can just click the “Try Project” link below and it will take you to the itch.io page, where you can press “Run Game”.
You may want to fullscreen the game to make it a bit more immersive, but it works either way.

Final touches on the README, itch.io page, player movement, and sound effects

I finished the GitHub readme file and added a short gameplay gif to attract the reader’s attention. I drew a stylized button link to make the “Try It” link pop.
I made a background image for the itch.io page and wrote a description.
I added some game juice by adding coyote time, which allows the player to jump even after they’ve fallen a little bit off a ledge. I also added squash and stretch to make the game feel more bouncy.
Finally, I made some 8-bit sound effects using JSFXR. They’re really simple as of now, but I think they’re enough for the kind of game I’m going for.
This will probably be the last devlog before I ship!

Created a third minigame, death screen, and a speedrun timer

The third level is biology themed, and you have to click on all the living organisms. I used a Godot TextureButton for each item, and the incorrect answers make you restart the level.

I also implemented a lose screen, which is one of the final requirements for the mission, so I’m getting pretty close to the end.

Finally, I made a system to track your fastest time to complete all three minigames.

I think I might be shipping soon!

Made a win screen, and made the UI look better

I drew a simple win screen that looks like a diploma, and the red circle at the bottom is a button which takes you to the menu.
I drew more of the UI myself, and I think it looks better than using Godot’s Labels.
For the minigame timer though, it really was easier to just use a Label here because I didn’t feel like setting up a custom pixel art font just to display some numbers.
I added the Quit button to the main menu, and made the Play button green.
Now, the main thing I have left is making a death screen, and probably one more minigame.

Created the second level - PreAlgebra

My second level involves solving a simple equation. There are four multiple choice options, which I made using TextureButtons in Godot. I plan to refine the visuals later.

Currently, the win condition doesn’t look like it isn’t working, but that’s only because there I haven’t yet made the next level.

Made a prototype of the first level

Since my game is school themed, I made the first level a history lesson. You play as George Washington in a tiny platformer level and you get to the magically floating declaration of independence.

The artwork doesn’t look great right now, and there isn’t a lose condition yet.

I did a couple things differently from the tutorial: I used a TileMapLayer instead of StaticBodies for each platform, and a rectangular collision shape for the player instead of the circular one for better feeling movement.

Set up the Godot project, made a menu screen, and healthbar display

I’m starting a new project on the mission “Make a WarioWare Game”, and my game is school themed.
I finished setting up Godot, GitHub, and WakaTime.

I made a health indicator which will pop up each time you die. The notebooks represent how many lives you have lost, and the timer at the bottom shows how long the message will stay up for.

Right now, my menu screen is super simple, and I haven’t drawn a quit button yet so it’s not really usable. But I plan on continuing with the NES color palette!
