NASA Part Cataloging System NPCS

Electronic part cataloging isn't tedious anymore! As a high school NASA Goddard intern, I was tasked with cataloging parts into a spreadsheet, and I was not happy. So instead, I decided to create a software that reads the words off of part labels. After intensive Python coding, I have finally finished it! Now other people at NASA are using it, mission accomplished. I have put the user experience first and tried to make it as efficient as possible.

I built an electronic part cataloging system for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. As a high school intern, I was tasked with manually typing into a spreadsheet the part numbers, date codes, quantities, and more for each of the thousands of electronic components my mentor had. I decided that I’m at NASA for a reason, and that I could code something up in Python, and so NPCS (NASA Part Cataloging System) was born. This is the first coding project of this scale that I have ever made, and I am more than happy to get a few users at NASA. The whole project was challenging because I didn’t know many of the libraries I was using, so I had to learn them and use them at the same time, along with a million different technical challenges that would be way too long to list. I am really proud that this project became a reality, but upset that only 10 of those 34 hours count because I forgot to submit devlogs. To test the project, make sure you have a Windows computer, or at least a Windows VM, and follow the README.md instructions on my GitHub! There is also a sample label image on my GitHub for testing.
