Tab Grab

Hi its been a long time since i last logged my development! My journey is almost at an end I’m hoping to finish in these the next 2 days but i have overall done plenty. Last time I posted a devlog I finished styling my V1 popup, however lots has changed. In my tab organization/saving extension I wanted to overall make it so that you could either manually send in tabs that you wanted to be saved or it would automatically send it in after a tab had been open for a certain amount of time. After lots of thinking, I didn’t see the use of the automatically sending in since there was a chance that a tab that you wouldn’t want to be closed could be closed and it would overall cause more stress for the user. I still wanted to play with the idea, so I vibecoded a version of this idea into my extension. As expected it didn’t’ seem to provide any use. This feature is still in app, since I feel like its just cool to have in any scenario the user is in, but it is disabled on default. Next the main point of this extension was so I could send in tabs and have it be auto organized by topic or whatever, so that I could always look back at the tabs whenever I wanted to. So I created this menu when a tab is right clicked called Send To Dashboard, sending tabs to the code. However, at that point this extension is no different from bookmarking. I wanted to put an emphasis on organization. However the easiest way to do organize was by domain, which itself wasn’t very organized. The user would refer to the tab they are looking for not by a random url, but by a topic. However, in order to do this you would need an AI to easily guestimate a good topic name for a folder that would be created for the tab to be stored in. So I used an old Gemini model api(free) and created a server.js where I’d create an asynchronous function that all I had to do was import the API and then use the functions of it to give it a prompt(ex. Asking to return a topic based on the tab details, URL, TITLE, etc.) and based off that result it would create a folder based on that name. However, I would need to transmitt these functions throughout files. This caused lots of export errors for me whenever I tried. So what I did was I posted a new POST route(ex. /organize) and then in the corresponding file i needed it in I would fetch that URL and call the async function. However I would constantly need to go into my terminal and individually call the command: node server.js. So I did some research and found a web service hosting platform called render where I could upload my git repo and it would run these API requests I needed!(These requests included, Organizing tabs into folders, Generating a summary for each tab, integrating a chat-bot(will get into later), and an obsidian like flow-chart(will get into later). Though since I am running on Render free, the requests are somewhat slow. Now overall the extension is basically done, it serves its purpose of being bookmarking pro, as it auto organizes your tabs making it easy for you to go back on things you want to look at and isn’t as cramped as normal bookmarking, or grouping tabs, which requires manual labor while this extension automatically organizes your tabs for you. However I felt like this wasn’t enough emphasis on the organization part I felt like I could add more. So obviously I did. So far it has been 2 weeks into this journey to make the extension better as I approach the deadline. My 3 main ideas were to 1) Generate a summary for each tab in a side bar 2) Integrate a chat-bot to make looking for tabs of related topics easier 3) I wanted to make a obsidian like flow-chart that connects tabs with lines based on relevance and color codes relevance. So far I have completely finished summaries for each tabs, the chat-bot works but needs some fine tuning, and gotten the base of the obsidian like flow-chart done, as it connects tabs based on relevance. Overall heavy polish is needed now.

Finished Pop-Up! So basically this past week I have been looking at an extensions tutorial to create gain experience with HTML/CSS/JS and the extension I am planning to make will help store and view old links that you wish to view sooner or later, but just don’t have the time or will to look at it currently. Overall, I struggled with this problem a lot, I was interested in all these things but never had the attention span to look at them, which made me have a lot of tabs open all the time. I always closed the tabs and bookmarked them but it got increasingly messy similar to my tabs. So I was planning on making an extension that could handle all these tabs. It would overall either automatically close these tabs after a period of time or you could manually close them and it would auto sort into another web page with into sub folders related to each topic so you could easily look back at these links and tabs you wanted to look at earlier. It may not be an amazing idea but I think its a great start for where I am at, and so far I have finished the Pop-Up Panel for the extension!
