Base of the Cosmic Chess Board and Astro Pawn - First Step Done!

I started with the base for the chess board, which is just a square block with an 8x8 grid on it. I learned how to make 3D pieces by first drawing the outline and then revolving the figure. Took me way longer than it should’ve, but I learned a lot! :)

Next step: Figure out how to model an astronaut helmet for the pawn. I’m still a beginner, so advice is appreciated!
Also, I’m thinking of making the board look like the space-time fabric (white grid all around), but I’m not sure how to do it/if I should yet. Other design ideas are welcome.
