i made a terminal emulator style personal website!

a website made with html/css/js that talks about myself and my projects, besides having some fun commands and interactable elements

features:

persistent storage of themes and command history
scrollable command history with up/down arrow
functional filesystem able to be navigated with cd, ls, cat
command parser that takes theoretically unlimited arguments
five different themes
autoscroll
dynamic terminal path
automatic scrolling to the latest command
dynamic helpme.txt generated from available commands
custom neofetch implementation
responsive layout for mobile devices
no libraries used
error handling for all commands

things that were challenging:

learning JS
reteaching myself html/css
adding the filesystem, wrapping my head around commands in general. spent the most time on the command logic
not breaking the entire site after one js implementation

things im proud of:

the site even works! wow! it’s not broken!
implementation of functional commands and filesystem

devlog 4: “i broke it”

site is pretty much finished!
added:

better command parsing, commands take multiple arguments instead of one
bunch of commands (ls, cat, cd all work!)
SOME mobile functionality
themes and command history now save between refreshes
autoscroll

there’s more cool stuff you just gotta use the site ;)

very happy with how the site has turned out!
added:

themes
command arguments; logic is better
learnt a bitta JS as well :)

not too sure what else to add, might ship after i add autocomplete, maybe syntax highlighting and some other little commands

devlog numeros dos: JS lockin

absolutely locked the frick in on js; added commands (long awaited update that took AGES and SO MUCH pain), command history and yeah that’s it lol but i learnt so much about JS so that’s amazing

stuff i learnt:

DOM
arrays
functions
that JS is the worst language ever

issues i faced:

understanding what variables mean what, where i should be appending them generally just how it works
arrays and how much of a pain they are

how i fixed it:

relentless trial and error. 5 hours for like 50 lines of code lol

devlog numero uno

what’s up guys :)
ignore the nearly two hours for incredibly basic styling lowkey had to reteach myself html lol

main goal of this site is to emulate a linux terminal, with some unique stylised options relating to stuff i like as well. definitely happy with how it looks right now, next thing to work on is the javascript for the input field, not sure how im gonna get the whole command stuff working, might needa do more messing around with divs but we’ll see how it goes

issues i faced

aligning the text and icons in the top bar (probably spent 80% of my time on this)
usual issues associated with divs and how fun they are to mess with
forcing myself to not use ai

how i fixed them

found an article that literally instantly fixed it

thugged it out and used the brainpower

stuff i learned:

properly centering divs (was so terrible never again)
styling input fields (pretty niche)

stuff i will have to learn:

javascript, mostly relating to tracking input fields (lowkey scared it’s gonna be hard, don’t hear good things about js)
actually coding with docs like you would have to pre-ai (genuinely find it so hard to do this but im determined to use no AI)
