Hey Hack Clubbers!

I’m building zkFog, a website that lets you play fog-of-war chess without a trusted server.

In fog chess you only see the squares your pieces can move to, and normally a server hides the rest of the board and everyone trusts it.

I’m replacing that server with zero-knowledge proofs so that each player’s view is secret to only them, not even the server, and cryptography proves that the moves are legal.

~2 hours in: built a 6x6 Los Alamos chess UI to keep implementation simple for now. Using Bun + Vite + Biome, and chessgroundx for the UI. I also added a bit of CSS to emulate the snappiness of chess.com’s UI.

I’ve also coded from scratch the engine that determines move legality (the dots that show up when you drag a piece).
