I built Cosmic Canvas, an interactive web explorer for NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) API using Vanilla JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, bundled with Vite.
The biggest challenge was setting up the automated GitHub Actions CI/CD deployment pipeline and handling different media types correctly (switching seamlessly between images, YouTube iframe embeds, and direct MP4 videos). I am proud of the custom sci-fi styling with clip-path borders and getting the interactive features working—especially the historical date picker (dating back to 1995), the random day generator, and local storage bookmarks so users can save their favorite space photos.
To test it out, select any date on the calendar, click “Random Day” to explore surprise celestial events, or save a picture to your favorites list!
