• made a new field in the getDomainRecords helper function to check for file existance and handle json parse fails
• made a new helper function to generate subdomain file path based of apex and subdomain
• changed tests to use the new implementation of getDomainRecords
• implemented tests for cloudflare proxied rules
• implemented tests for dns limitation rules
• implemented tests for root and nested subdomain ownership

ts is me with random lock in phases:

still not fully implemented to be included with the testing workflow, i have a lot of features planned but i prefer to finish this first.

• better error messages for expect fails
• extra checks for empty objects, arrays, and strings
• made most/all tests use testing api specifics rather than a conditional check if expression is true (for better error messages)
• add a check for capping filenames to less than 245 characters (as per dns hostname rules)
• checks for nested apex in filenames (example: steve.is-my.id.json is invalid)
• reorder some tests
• add a check for uppercase letters (one of the existing subdomains violated this rule so i fixed it manually)
• add a check for repeated dashes (–) as the current regex doesnt catch this and i didnt feel like changing it
• created empty tests as drafts for later to be implemented
• remove unused ALIAS record handling as it was used internally but not needed anymore

so mostly focused on improving the register repo and docs experience as i feel like the website is established and complete at this point.

i am still learning the bun/jest api on writing test code so this may not be perfect, but its a start!

• made a wrapper function for looping through subdomain files using callbacks and bun fs api
• improve regex checks for ipv4, ipv6, and fqdns based on ajv-formats npm package (regex is copied pasted from source code rather than installing the package directly as that introduces bloat and dependency management)
• slight fixed to tests handling promises (still rather broken but ill fix that later)
• add new constants for looping though records
• made a helper function to read subdomain file and parse the json. both using bun fs api
• update all test fail messages to print file paths for easy tracing
• new test to check schema structure and record values using ip and domain regexes

split time between writing docs (uncommited, might be discarded due to low quality) and writing tests leveraging bun apis.

these tests are not completed, therefore they wont be used for github actions pr check workflows (yet).

• wrote docs: beginners guide (partial) and unsupported services (empty)
• extracted typescript types and constant to schema.ts for use in test units
• initialized bun for package management in the future if needed
• created deep.test.ts
• wrote test for checking unknown files outside of the /domains/[apex] directories
• wrote test for checking file names valid subdomain fqdns
• wrote test for checking if json is valid and parse-able

okay well ships on this project isnt really doing the best in terms of stardance output, so i really need to address a lot of these critics if i want good multipliers.

anyways so most of the time here is spent on writing ci tests for the register repo. however, i decided to scratch the majority of this code due to poor implementation execution. so this devlog will only have commits resolving some critics.

website:

• fix z-index header bug where some elements would appear above the bar
• add a warning tip to the website repo readme for anyone who ends up there instead of the register repo
• changed the view source link for this project on stardance to redirect to the register repo
• updated the readme (adapted from my personal website repo readme)

register:

• (scratched) test framework with raw js and bun
• add a tip for registering via web ui

okay a bit of a rant but school is starting to burn me out again. honestly i already got my certificate but now my motivator is gonna be the shop items. (i havent spent anything yet, not even for domain grants) im saving up and will spend after stardance ends. i am planning to hopefully do at least 1 - 1.5 hours on weekdays and hopefully overtime on weekends. we’ll see how that turns out i guess.

edit: okay so i forgot some other changes but i cant really add those minutes to this devlog so ill just put the change here:

• added a character limit to the homepage search input
• (register repo) add a tip in quickstart doc about webui registering

small devlog but prob worth mentioning

well the actions script failed due to worker routes being read only. i decided to use dnscontrol’s built in CF_REDIRECT record for this instead and also update it due to missmatch TTL from dev with prod.

apparently this caused an error because actions kept failing to deploy due to missing creds. after a while of debugging and headbanging, i folded and attempted to use github copilot agent to try and fix it (hehe pr number 67) but that didnt do the trick.

it was only when i checked the repo secrets that i realized the env variable is called CF_API_TOKEN and not CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN. that was like hours of my time spent away debugging instead of working on the website like i planned but oh well

took longer than expected, now im rewriting the dnscontrol script for deploying dns records to support multiple apex domains. this was rather challenging due to dnscontrol’s heavily limited dsl and language features, but eventually it works and now i just need to add documentation in markdown.

• fix type errors and cleanup code in dnscontrol.js before rewrite
• cleanup unused scripts and nix files
• remove nix branch (previous plan but support was too limited to be reliable)
• modified json schema so now “record” key is “records” (plural)
• update github action yaml files as well as fix old file paths

mhm not bad so to say

• reordered fetch function calls for stats display
• adjusted the typing and count functions for smootheness
• use lavender as the primary color
• complete homepage sections (mostly copied from the old site)
• add a footer

and yes i made the github logo cyan but cmon we need some colors here
