The year is 1998.

You’ve just turned on your computer, the CRT monitor flickers to life, and RetroOS loads.

I built RetroOS as a little experiment to recreate what using a computer around 1998 might have felt like. What started as a simple HTML project slowly turned into a full retro desktop with draggable windows, a Start menu, taskbar, Notepad, file explorer, IDE, fake internet browser, and even a power button.

The hardest part was getting everything to work together, especially making the windows behave properly without constantly overlapping or breaking.

What I’m most proud of is that it feels less like a webpage and more like an actual little computer.

You’ll find:

  • A mini internet explorer
  • A built in working IDE
  • A file explorer
  • A working notepad
  • A readme.txt file to help you navigate the OS
  • Desktop icons for the applications
  • A volume control bar
  • A power button
  • The time(if you need it i guess)

Finished all the applications and added a taskbar
I forgot to include the notepad and file manager in the last devlog

I think im finished for now, will definitely develop this project further in the WebOS 2 mission

Added a README.txt file along with a notepad application, a volume bar and a power button with the time next to it. I’ll gonna add a bunch of other applications and finish up soon
