Bast.sh is a terminal native SSH hosts and keys manager. Here’s why. I was interning at a company who religiously use GCP. The problem was that Termius doesn’t have GCP sync, and Termius doesn’t run in my terminal! So, I decided to make a TUI (in Go!) which solved this. It uses your current ssh config and extends it. That means we use the native ssh binary. Connect, group, filter, hosts and keys. Sync hosts between your machine and AWS, GCP and Azure, with keyless connection via the native platform CLI. Sync between your machines with Bast Vault, a free web service, or self host it. SFTP is a lightweight file explorer, allowing quick file transfers using the same ssh config. No need for another app. All native.

Today I added an SFTP TUI into Bast and added a end to end encrypted key and host sync to the cloud. The SFTP interface connects with the same as hosts, and also has a cool chmod interface, since I still can’t remember how to do chmod correctly. The host sync encrypts Bast-managed hosts and keys with a local passphrase, and communicates via a hosted (or self hosted!) api which stores metadata in Upstash for super quick checks to see if a sync needs to happen, and the encrypted blob in R2. This was fun.

AWS, GCP, Azure, Grouping, Speed and Mono! The past few days I’ve made a lot of cool enhancements. Firstly, we support AWS, GCP and Azure for cloud syncing. It uses the native CLI to sync your remote hosts, and uses the CLI to connect you without having a private key on your machine. This allows companies to keep control of their machines. Next, I made opening Bast 5x faster, and parsing config 13x faster. There is a new grouping mechanism, and a contributor is actually working on a new flow to make it even easier. Bast can now suggest hosts to add and connect to if you’ve tried to connect to them before, from your history file. And finally, it’s now a monorepo!

Today I built Amazon EC2 cloud sync into Bast. It syncs all accessible VMs into the UI. It connects by creating a temporary SSH key and uploading it to the guest agent via the native Amazon CLI. That means no keys are needed to be stored locally, and the permission to access the VM is handled by AWS’s own policies.

I just launched Bast.sh. Bast.sh is a TUI (and CLI) to browse and edit your SSH hosts and keys. It uses the native ssh binary and uses your per-existing SSH config, so as soon as you open Bast you’ll already be able to get started. It helps with organisation of hosts, with groups, tags and colours.
