Earthy

I made earthy, it is a mission project and my main goal behind is to learn more JS and get used to JS concepts.

Currently I mainly code in python and sometimes C or C++ also learning assembly. I barely do frontend and I’m planning to learn frontend over the next few weeks!

A few features of the website:

  • Date picker so you can select the date of the image you want to see :D
  • NASA image displayed for each day that has passed
  • Short description + title off the image displayed

The css and html went smoothly although I had trouble inverting the design on the side and eventually had to ask chatgpt on how to invert it.

Quick note: If it says “undefined” you have picked a date in the future and NASA’s API hasn’t selected a image for that date. You must select it from the past only.

I worked on the code; the CSS, js and html. I had quite a few issues especially with the CSS misbehaving as the design on the sides would not invert and was not symmetrical I eventually found how to invert it succesfully.

The API was returning the NASA logo for some reason although it turns out I was using the wrong URL and figured it out after I asked chatgpt.

The rest of the codebase went smoothly, I’m starting to get used to js more and more currently I mainly code only in python so I’m trying to learn js! There are a few concepts hard to wrap my head around but eventually learnt them : p

I made a basic slack bot for the slack bot mission, It is hosted on the hackclub nest!!!

It has 3 commands:
/bobby-ping : Checks if the bot is running and it’s latency
/bobby-fact-of-the-day : Gives a random fact that refreshes daily!!!
/bobby-catpics : Gives a random cat pic yayaya

I used a bit of AI, mainly for debugging and some functions in JS was a bit of a learning curve since I barely use it and last time I used it was months ago however it went pretty smoothly overall : DDD

I just finished the codebase, I have to host it on nest and it should be ready to ship. I have also made the Readme and used a couple API’s to fetch a random cat pic and a random fact that refreshes everyday I found them through https://free-apis.github.io/ and I don’t code much in JS so this was a bit of a learning experience for me lol
