#Time to fix the low torque issues 🫩🫩

In this devlog, I attempted MANY fixes for the gearbox, because it turns out there are a LOT of ways to do it wrong.

  • I used plastic straws as bearings instead of cardboard, reducing the friction by a LOT
  • I realigned the frame to ensure the axles would all be aligned
  • I changed from a DC motor to a stepper motor, which I then will step down rather than step up to get a little bit more speed than I had in the first devlog
  • I changed the stepper motor code to be 2 wave so that it’s stronger and has a little bit more power
  • Also got some insights into gear making and designing, when 3D printing clustered gears, always either add a little gap between the small gear and the large gear or make the small gear have a lot more depth than the large gear. This solves two problems, 1. If the large gears are even slightly off and angled they won’t mesh and stop rotation as easily and 2. There will be less friction with the large gears rubbing against each other
    And now it works! (somewhat)

It still feels a little weak, but I pray that it’ll do for now to complete the project. Now I had to reattach it to the frame that I made in the previous devlogs and ensure the code still runs properly.

I also want to work on the wheels, they were pretty uneven last time and could easily cause it to end up going wonky rather than straight.

Finally, I do have an issue with the power situation. I have a 5v battery attached to a power module to try to power the whole thing, but the stepper motor takes too much power and won’t run if powered ONLY by the 5v battery. To sweep this problem under the carpet for now, I have it powered by my laptop, but it’s a problem I’ll have to deal with sooner rather than later.
