Servoized Butterfly

A big butterfly I can hang on my wall. I want it to sit idle, flapping its wings casually. If it hears something loud (like one of my crashouts when I lose all the progress on a project), It starts to flap its wings even quicker. How will I be making this? 2 Servos. A Few 3D Prints and Electronics. Construction Paper. An ESP32. And a whole lotta hot glue.

Worked on a state machine for the butterfly, everything should be coded, but I will need to test the rest with the real thing now. I didnt add any microphone logic, but will do once I have the actual parts.

A motorized butterfly… The planning for it and the cad. I did some additional changes to the wing attachment.

PLANNING
What would be the simpliest way to make the wings flap?

  • Using a vibrator and a string to move it around (small sized)

  • Using a servo linked to a 4 bar linkage (more complicated)

  • Using 2 servos, each servo controlling a seperate wing + flap (probably the easiest but heavy) linear actuator?

  • I think the 2 servos are the easiest

  • If i do two servos, I can create an attachement for the servo (a basic coupler) to the wing attachment.

  • The attachment can be smaller, i only need it to hold the wing

  • Height of attachment has to be taller than the servo3d printing issues? tolerences might be a problem, I can find a better printer to print on (friends, school, other sources)

  • I want to add a MAX9814 microphone (used for loud noise detection, to make it so that if the butterfly is close to loud noises, the wings flap faster

  • The servos need to be positional, origin will start the wings up

CADDING

  • To scale, size of the base should be 0.5 inch x 3.5 inch
  • The base needed chamfers and fillets for printing the outlet/plug better
  • Wing is 2.75 inch long, 0.75 diameter, fillets and chamfers to relieve sharp edges
  • The wing should be taller than the servo, so that when I make butterfly wings (probably out of paper), it will sit nicely.
  • The printing should be fine on an Bambu Lab X1, I’m not sure it will print the coupler well on my Deltiq 2.
