Learning how to use Blender by following tutorials

Ship #1 Pending review

I made a Blender Donut and Coffee Mug following Blender Guru's Beginner Blender Tutorial (2026) on YouTube. It was challenging because I previously only knew how to model in Fusion360 and Blender is a lot different than Fusion360, but it was fun to see the final result come together! This is the first step in my Blender journey, since I originally wanted to learn Blender so I can 3D model and print more cosplay props!

I finished the Blender Donut!

Primarily done since I was only aiming to learn core 3D modeling skills since I want to model more cosplay props, which I though Blender would allow me to do because of the accessibility of its organic modeling.

Today I finished by editing the mug thickness, making a plate for the donut, and adding a table for everything to sit on. I also learned more about proportional editing and sculpting in order to make certain parts of the icing more dense, and latticing to manipulate and object’s thickness after it was already made.

Afterwards, I learned how to apply textures via both an image and a PBR texture pack and UV Editing. I also added another face in the coffee mug so it actually has coffee. And finally, I took some renders of the scene both with and without textures, which you can see below.

Making a donut in blender for the first time!

I’m currently learning how to use Blender and am following the Beginner Blender Tutorial (2026) from Blender Guru on YouTube. Today, I was able to learn a ton of new things from putting down a shape to modifying it to make it more realistic.

I was pretty surprised how fast I got into organic modeling since I’ve only used Fusion360 before. Usually organic modeling is the bane of my existence on there, but here, it just requires a lot of patience. I feel like Blender is a bit more easy to use but it just has a ton of features that I don’t know about.

I also learned about modifiers. They’re really interesting because they give your objects some sort of property before you apply it to become a real thing. It’s pretty cool.

Next time I’ll continue the tutorial and hopefully finish it.
