Day 18: Power button

I might not actually need a plunger?
maybe just letting the power button stick onto the switch would work
made the switch blue for better visibility

Day 17: clueless so im messing around in cad

spent the day looking for resources or tutorials on how to make the actuator for the power button to no avail. is it really that niche?? so i just found the closest thing and used it as a reference. made a super dodgy concept of it but theres still many things i need to fix for it, like how am i even supposed to constrain it to one axis only??

Day 16: Added screw holes, port holes and stuff++

Spent a whole 8 hours on freecad adding screw mounts, adding the holes for usbc receptacle, 3.5mm jack, microsd card, and added an indent for the battery. Just missing the power button stuff. After that it should be the screen, and then fixing the length of the rotary encoder, as of now its wayy too long 💔

Day 15: reworking the pcb

moving the battery and stuff circuits to the bottom, to make space for the battery
should only have to change the fpc connector for the screen then the pcb should be almost done?

Day 14: hitting a wall 💔

kinda reaching a stagnant point, mostly just spending time considering about the layout and placements of each component to fit everything within the small size.
This is so not fun 💔 how do they fit all the components in such tight spaces. No solutions for now, thinking of the best compromise, either decrease battery size or increase the overall size and keep the capacity. Also the sockets and receptacles and stuff are so far away from the surface of the case, need to bring them out, maybe adding tabs.

Day 13: New design for jmp3, and fixed battery circuit errors

  • redid the design, ditching popout screen and replaced it with a round screen, like the ones used in smartwatches, then using only 1 rotary encoder for the controls. maybe ill add volume buttons separately for ease of use. but for now itll be just one rotary encoder.
  • fixed a few errors from my battery circuit
  • sketched in paint, itll look better than this lol

Day 12: So the pop out screen is kinda unachievable

in freecad ive noticed that the pcb needs its own space, and so does the battery, then if i were to add the pop out screen it would need its own space too. its near impossible to cram all of that in “pocket size” and im just some normal guy so im not going to attempt it for now

i unfortunately have to switch designs, so far im looking into adding either a round display, and adding a matte glass or smoked acrylic on top

i also thought of doing like a flip out screen but it wouldnt really fit my design

im open to any suggestions design wise

Day 11: adding latching pin to the latching mechanism

  • just some cad
    think i might have to resize everything 💔, sizes of the components arent what i expected, have to rearrange the components to have them fit into the size i want
    starting to doubt if pocket size is really achieveable 🥀
    the pop out screen will need some space, but the pcb is in the way

Day 8: Rethinking components.. and researching push-push mechanisms

  • someone reminded me of esp32 wroom 32 chips BT, and i worry BT4.2 may be lacking so im considering switching to esp32 s31 wroom 3 (might be overkill? idk)
  • i also found out abt BT audio modules, err i think those arent necessary for this project so im gonna skip that actually
  • spent the day basically studying sd card sockets push-push mechanisms, my pop out screen will probably be using this mechanism, just with a few tweaks to make it work, but mostly i think i got it down, just need to figure out how to CAD it with my limited skills..

Day 7: Somewhat done with the pcb

  • should be pretty much it for the pcb, 4 layers, added an AMP cuz i forgot abt that, uh i couldnt find a right angle rotary encoder footprint so that there like that and changed volume buttons to a rotary encoder
  • i really tried to keep the size within 60x90mm but the keepout zone is just so big i ended up resulting to 60x91mm, i really want the volume control knob on the right
    Anyways for the actual design itself, i want the screen to be a pop out one, as in it stays inside, then when you want the screen, press it, and it pops out.
