deadline got slightly extended, which means i was able to make some slight tweaks to make everything run more smoothly! first, i added some music in (all assets from pixabay). then, we merged both the story and gui edits (by @kjoy116 ) onto the main branch so that most of the game was running smoothly. i had some issues with backgrounds not filling in the whole screen which i thought was an issue with my canvas size, but i figured it might be worth it to play around with ren’py to see if there was a fix. i referenced the transform commands in ren’py’s documentation since that’s where some similar problems online pointed me towards, so it ended up being a pretty easy fix! lastly, i worked on making the itch.io page look presentable (which was pretty quick, around half an hour)! the game is live on itch.io now, so that’s exciting!
game jam ends in seven hours sob. i drew nine backgrounds (quite challenging as a non-artist) and learned….how to draw crystals! i wrote four new scenes (and rewrote them…and rewrote them…) and worked on making the story flow a little bit more smoothly, both writing-wise and display-wise. i learned how to apply transforms and transitions, and started putting them in throughout the game!
day 3/4: wrote a LOT more of the story, including mapping out 5 endings! our team artist made some more amazing character designs like this one below :) (name tbd) which i’ve started importing. my next few goals are to: add in backgrounds and the rest of the characters, attach variables to every decision so that they all impact which ending you get to varying extents, and making the gui look nicer through adding new fonts, colors, and custom text boxes!
day 1/2: learning ren’py and planning out a story! it actually ended up being way easier than I was expecting to get the hang of ren’py since it’s basically just python, so it looks like the majority of the effort for this project is going to be going towards story writing. got the opening scene done after a bit of rewriting to make it flow better, and we have a draft of the general story. the theme for the game jam is “the void,” so the way we’ve decided to incorporate this is that you have to fight a void-like entity that sucks the life out of everything she touches, while making new friends (or killing them, it’s up to you) along the way.
