Microsoft Flight simulator tracking softwate

Ship #1 Pending review

What did you make?

I built AeroTrace, a flight telemetry and analysis tool for Microsoft Flight Simulator. It connects simulator telemetry to a web dashboard where users can explore flight sessions, review telemetry data, browse flight history, and view post-flight reports. I also implemented a public demo mode with sample flights, allowing reviewers to explore the interface without needing MSFS

What was challenging?

One of the biggest challenges was designing a reliable connection between live simulator telemetry and the dashboard while keeping the system safe and predictable. I worked on telemetry validation, flight-session handling, API testing, and preventing duplicate or missing data from affecting reports. Making the existing application deployable as a public demo without exposing my local simulator connector was another important challenge.

What are you proud of?

I’m proud that AeroTrace combines an actual simulator-connected workflow with a usable web interface, rather than being just a static mockup. The project includes typed data validation, flight history, post-flight reporting, and automated frontend tests. I’m especially proud of adding a demo mode that lets people explore the project independently while preserving local live-simulator functionality.

What should people know so they can test your project?

Open the public demo URL and navigate to the dashboard and flight history. Select any sample flight to explore its telemetry and post-flight report. The interface displays a clear “DEMO DATA — NOT LIVE MSFS TELEMETRY” banner in demo mode. The public demo uses sample data; live telemetry requires Microsoft Flight Simulator and the local Python connector running on a compatible setup.

Worked on AeroTrace’s flight telemetry and API testing infrastructure today.

  • Added Zod schemas to validate telemetry samples, flight sessions, connector status, and flight reports.
  • Defined flight lifecycle states and telemetry quality/provenance fields.
  • Added API tests for flight finalization, report retrieval, and telemetry synchronization.
  • Tested error handling for unavailable connectors and incomplete flight sessions.
  • Added validation for local API URLs to reject unsafe remote destinations.
  • Tested telemetry deduplication, pagination, and handling of missing sensor values.
  • Added regression tests for interrupted flights and observed MSFS telemetry.
  • Focused on reliable data validation and accurate flight reporting.
