Overly Honest Resume Generator

A hilarious web app that generates brutally honest corporate resumes based on real world inputs.

Ship #1 Pending review

I designed the Overly Honest Resume Generator.
This is a funny website that takes your truthful inputs (such as distractions at work and motivations) and creates a funny corporate resume with fake experience, education and references. It also has a Job Application Simulator where you can apply using your truthful resume to companies such as Goggle and Pear Inc. You will recieve a random funny response letting you know whether you have been accepted or rejected. You can also print your resume.

Features I found challenging to implement:
Dynamic HTML content using the DOM and managing the state of the UI: Dynamically generating sections of HTML content depending on user input from a form. Ensuring the resume would display correctly by showing/hiding elements depending on the form.

Debugging ID/class name mistakes and CSS: Debugging small issues such as ID/class name mistakes and CSS syntax errors in the HTML/JS.

Randomising the corporate response and printing the resume: Creating a probability based (80/20) generator for the corporate response. Creating my own @media print CSS to ensure the action buttons would disappear when printing.

I am pleased with how my first stardance project turned out. The design is very clean and works as intended since I only learnt CSS for this project. I also like how you can apply to big corporations!

How to use:

  1. Go to the URL of the site in any browser.

  2. Either press one of the Quick-Fill Presets or enter your own information (Name, Desired Title, Real Motivation, Workplace Distraction).

  3. Click Generate Ultimate Dossier.

  4. Once your dossier has appeared scroll to the bottom and select a company to apply for from the Job Application Simulator. Click Send Application!

  5. Click Print Resume to print your resume.

DEVLOG #4

After generating the resume, why leave it sitting idle?
I have had this exact question.
Now, I have solved it (to a decent extent).
I have extended the project by adding a system for emailing the resume to big corporate giants. I did change the spellings of their names a little to avoid any lawsuits.
Now, when you complete creating your honest resume, you get the option to mail it to a company of your choice. After clicking send, just wait a moment to get a reply as well from the company.
You may get accepted or rejected (it’s random), along with a response.
Go check it out to try your luck!!!

I added a setting that is a “fill preset” of two main types (based on the assumption of the types of people who may view my website) that fills in the blanks. But you can still change it and customise it according to your will.
I updated the “generateResume” to include new descriptions and improved the formatting. Now the resume that gets printed out is more descriptive than the earlier version.
I updated the resume generator and enhanced the layout with additional sections for professional experience and education.

It is now significantly better than the last version. I did learn a lot more today to change many things, add some and debug even more.

There was a bug where clicking the “Generate Resume” button did nothing. The button was unresponsive. So I fixed that, as well as a few other minor mistakes. Now the website is working properly.

I also added a “Print” button, which prints out the generated resume.

Lastly, I completed the development of the website, as well as writing a README.md file and the website is deployed.

DEVLOG #1

I started creating a Website, its entire purpose is to create a funny resume after recieving some information from the user.
I had basic knowledge regarding HTML and for the purpose of creating this, I learned some amount of CSS and only the required amount of Javascript. This was the hardest part and it took a lot of time.
Now currently the HTML code and the CSS part is created and works well but the Javascript part still has some bugs which I need to resolve.

Also, this is only the second website that I have created entirely by myself till now.
