Coldline-inspired Alarm

Hardware
  • 11 Devlogs

This alarm project is inspired by an indie game called Coldline. The main idea here is to complete a minigame in order to cancel your ringing nuclear siren which will progressively goes louder and louder over time. The alarm itself is planned to have red telephone-like appearance. Although the original Coldline gameplay and the design assume heavy reliance on telephone line interaction, the planned minigames will be completely different (sorry...)

Because I know there will be a lot of trials and errors, I’ve recreate the schematic inside Wokwi and set up Wokwi simulator inside VS Code (I mean it’s free and why not?)

I don’t use Wakatime this time because I’m not yet started coding.

This is just me or the TFT display pinout is a bit…

weird

Today, I finished the all-new phone box body.
Yeay!

Not exactly “smooth”, and I’m not yet added the handset holder + mold. But hey, at least some progress can be made (I’m to sleepy to continue, sorry!).

WOooO, I’m so excited to finish this project.

Ehem… I think I had some… uhm ‘development’.

Remember when I first starting the project? That time, I hate CAD SO MUCH.

Now…, I’ve found myself enjoying the CAD process. It is fun indeed.

Here’s a list for what I’ve done and learned:

  • REVAMPING the OLD UGLY phone box design. (I’m currently working on the internal walls.
  • I learned to trust the process
  • I learned that I can use formulas inside dimension tool. So I did! I learned to apply the Pythagorean theorem to my design! (I know it’s pretty basic, but hey, everyone has to start somewhere)

What happened today?
ALOT.
Here’s a summary:

  1. Cooked by my arc nemesis: “Rail not smooth error”.
  2. Trying to “fix” projection and alignment issues (they’re now worse btw)
  3. Banged my head several times.
  4. Still stuck fixing the handset bell for 4 and a half hours
  5. Lobotomized myself
  6. Had a massive thinking moment
  7. Decided that “the handset aren’t necessary”
  8. Sacrificed the telephone handset to actually make some progress.
  9. Moved-on to polish the phone box.

“Sometimes, a sacrifice must be made. Especially when you’re stuck for 6 devlogs in a row” - Sun Tzu

I’m not lazy, okay? I’m just having a replan for effectivity.

Note: Maybe, I will try to complete the handset once everything else finished.

Made the top, side, and a bunch of garbage sketches.
This time, I’m exploring surface modeling.

Huft… How newbie am I?

I don’t even know if I can make it on time.
Seems there’s no progress on the CAD phase ;(

How can making a telephone handset be this hard?

Based on some Slack feedbacks, I migrated to Autodesk Fusion.

The progress is minimal today. This is due to tomorrow’s science exam. Maybe I’ll start a dead-grind tomorrow to make up for the wasted time.

My target is to finish the project’s design by the eight of October.

Ohhhhh, time is running out so quickly, isn’t it?

Made the phone box and outline of the… ummm… phone? phone handle?

I learned the best way to shape the phone box is to design the lid first, and then the walls. Last time, I did the reverse, so that’s why I’m stuck.

The amount of effort required to create a simple shape made me respect hobbyist and engineers more.

I literally spent most of the time trying to figure out how to make symmetrical phone, lol.

I tried to make the phone 3D, but again… It’s harder than I thought. I ended up to restart the 3D-fication process of the phone.

uhm.
long story short, I revamped everything twice.
why?

  1. it turns out, the display is much longer than I anticipated. so the pcb layout must be tweaked.
  2. the cad model is… suboptimal if i say.

but i think i’m getting hang of it. now i know how to use sketch, dimension, and extrude properly. still, i have a long way to go.

Coldline-inspired alarm

I’m sooooo clueless. This is my first ever attempt to design a schematic, PCB, and CAD (CAD-ing, I guess?).

Schematic? All good, a piece of cake.
PCB? A lot of retries, but still manageable.
CAD? OH NO NO NO. A PHASE OF ABSOLUTE DOOM AND DESPAIR
