I made a puzzle sliding game called “mix it. fix it.” where the user can choose a random image or insert his/her image and make it into a puzzle which he/she can solve it by moving the pieces into their correct position.
I included some extra features like streaks, XP, levels, coins, missions, hints, undo, personal best, pause/restart, dark mode, keyboard, and mobile controls.
What were the challenges?
The most challenging part was to make the mechanics of the game work correctly. Every piece has to move only when it is next to the empty slot, and to test it all out on different sizes, like 5×5, 6×6, 7×7 to see if it worked.
Another challenge was to make it compatible for both mobile and pc because their controls are different.
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of turning the project into something “real,” that makes it feel like an actual small game and not just a demo sliding puzzle experiment. Having XP, streaks, missions, hints, personal best, and puzzle sizes all make the game feel more complete, like a real game that makes you want to play more.
Another thing that I am proud of is that the user can insert his/her photo into the game which creates a unique experience.
What feedback would you give to other testers?
First, I recommend to try a 2×2 puzzle first to get used to the controls. Tap/click on the piece that is next to the empty slot to move it there.
After getting used to it, you can try bigger sizes like 4×4, 5×5, etc.
Also, you can:
-insert your own image, try different sizes of puzzles, hit the hint button when you are stuck,
press undo to go back to your previous move,
try keyboard controls,
test on mobile if you have one,
and try to beat your personal best! 💪
Pro tip: the bigger the size is, the harder it is!
