I'm building an AI-powered real time tutoring browser extension, Calyxa! Whenever a student is struggling on a math problem, they simply need to press a keyboard shortcut to call Calyxa, then the student can start having conversations with Calyxa, while it answers the student's questions step-by-step without giving out the correct answer immediately, annotates on the screen, and changes its response based on the student's study habits and performance.

Calyxa - Real Time AI Tutor!

Hi guys! I’m currently a rising high school senior who’s been studying for the SAT. While studying for the SAT, I’ve had many struggles with making full advantages and organizing the free study resources. Motivation

Whatever I just said wasn’t the main project I’m working on right now, Calyxa, though. As I added more features to SaturnPath, including study tracking, performance analytics, automated mistake logging, question bank inventory management…etc., I thought of why not just apply all these useful features to all the subjects? What’s more, SaturnPath didn’t have any “teaching” features. All it does is building a customized study plan and tell you which practice to do based on your study performance. Eventually, I landed with the idea of building Calyxa.

Workflow

For anyone wondering, I came to the name “Calyxa” because “calyx” are the leaves that surrounds a flower and supporting its growth. Similarly, I want Calyxa to support the student’s study efficiency. For the specific workflow, whenever a student is doing homework on their laptops (on Khan Academy, Deltamath, etc.) and accounts an obstacle, they simply press shortcut keys to call out Calyxa. They’ll briefly explain what they don’t understand in either text or voice (for example, “why doesn’t the Pythagorean theorem work here?”) Calyxa will then analyze the student’s screen quickly, then respond in either text or voice (for example, “this isn’t a right triangle, so the Pythagorean theorem won’t work here!”). The student can then continue the conversation with Calyxa like so, and Calyxa will guide the student through the problem step-by-step with on-screen annotations. After each tutoring sessions, Calyxa will remember the student’s mistake patterns, misconceptions, and many more other study data.

Current Changes

I just started working on Calyxa yesterday, since my last project, SaturnPath, was launched only a week ago on June 16, so I spent most time fixing SaturnPath before I have time for Calyxa. Here’s what I have right now: extension shortcut key with command/ctrl+shift+Y to call out Calyxa, and a login page that records the available tutoring sessions left this month. The next step will be implementing the actual conversation feature with Calyxa, adding API keys, and obviously polishing the ugly UI right now.
