A melody rush saga game available on Play Store

Ship #1

I built Melody Rush Saga, a 180 BPM rhythm game where you tap glass balls to the beat across 7 songs. The game features a dynamic day/night cycle with stars, moon, and planets, plus power-ups like airplane lane clears, gem collection, shields, and a skull ball that ends your game if tapped.

The hardest challenge was getting the game to work in release mode on Android. My app kept crashing with a ClassNotFoundException error that took over 20 builds and days of debugging to fix. I learned about ProGuard rules, Kotlin vs Java MainActivity, and how Android handles release builds differently from debug.

I'm most proud of the skull ball mechanic — it only triggers Game Over when you actually tap it, not when it falls off screen. Getting that logic right taught me more about game design than any tutorial could.

To test my game, download it free from Google Play Store. Pick any song, tap the falling glass balls, try the airplane power-up, collect gems, and avoid the skull! It works best on Android phones. Let me know your high score!

honestly i spent way too long on this one. the skull ball was supposed to end the game only when you tap it, but it was also killing players when it just fell off the screen. that’s not how it should work lol

turns out the updateBalls() method was calling gameOver() for EVERY type of ball that went past the screen. i just needed to make it skip the skull. two lines of code. THREE HOURS of staring at my screen wondering why it wasn’t working 😭

also fixed the overlapping issue where regular balls were hiding behind skulls. players were dying without even seeing what they tapped. that felt unfair so i made them spawn separately now

still learning. still breaking things. still fixing them. this is my first real game and im just a 11th grader figuring things out as i go
