hi!
just a 14 year old developer
i absolutely enjoy ts
Ship

Hello, this is the final devlog for my project, i believe that the website, for its sole purpose is now totally finished. 'just tell me what to do' is a website i have developed for a huge problem in real life, decision making. You have to choose a time duration (the time u have on hand), and you msut choose how you are feeling (emotion), and then type out a brain dump. This input gives you an output that helps you come to a decision about your problem. There are also modes for the responses, these modes change the way the AI responds to you. There is a mode recommendation feature where if the AI believes that your brain dump is better suitable for another mode, then it recommends you to swap to that mode instead. I have really enjoyed working on this site. There were many bugs along the way, but in the end it all worked out!

i worked a lot on the backend already so now i decided to work on the frontend. im developing a liquid glass component for the topbar, its not ready yet, trust me making it is a PAIN. im also almost done with the mode recommendations! im pretty sure by tommorow, or today, all of these updates will be out!

its me again! i was on a grind, and i spent 8 hours refining the mode-specific responses, i did not change much else. next up, im planning on adding mode recommendations. this update looks at your brain dump, and suggests if there is a better mode for this input.

The second ship of just tell me what to do! Alright, first, here's a quick summary on what just tell me what to do is. An AI powered tool, where you choose your time on hand, then you choose how you are feeling, and then finally dump your thoughts. This gives you the next step, the next step may help to come to a more precise decision, or it maybe just to cheer you up. I went through WAY too many difficulties during this making, i tried making user accounts, but that didnt work out, and a lot more was tried... Now the HUGE update! Modes have been added to the AI, You get to choose how the AI behaves with you! There are six new modes, (the details for them are in the previous devlog) selecting the right mode can u help you for the next step much more effectively! I am really proud of my progress so far, its been insane how much work has been put into this project, and im hoping to continue this further!

okay, honestly that grind was insane. 12 hours of work, i toughed it out. anyways, now to the project. alright, so a super cool update, now theres modes to the ai, like personalities that u think will best suit you. 6 modes have been added, just decide - the defualt, vent - ai is a calm listener and gives u small gentle steps, roast me - straight forward, friend-like attitude that shows you the total truth in a blunt way, hype me up - high energy, gets you pumped up u for the next step, talk it through - thinks alongside with you, and provides clarity, and finally break it down - treats your brain dumb as a task list, and is more analytical. These are the new modes, and ive made a change mode button on the tool page. This may be my final devlog before the ship! Insane update, im excited to see how this turns out!

INSANE UPDATEEEEE! alright now ive added 2 new pages instead of 1 long scroll through page. Personally, the scroll through is really generic, and feels unfinished. One page is for “the tool,” (the ai suggester on waht to do) the other is called “my patterns” this gives u an analysis on your mood trends, productive hours etc. Im not sure if im planning to keep this feature since it feels kind of pointless. I also have added a pomodoro timer, where u get 25 minutes to complete your activity, its totally optional. In addition to that i added a share button, so u can copy it and put it into your notes, or screenshot it and send it to people! anyways, thats it for now. stay tuned for the next one!

Today in Space! A website powered by nasa's apod API, it displays nasa's astronomy picture of the day! it displays it with the title, explanation, and picture. The bug fixes were quite tough. firstly, the api data fetch was not working, but i came through! secondly, the ui looked generic, so i fixed it. Im proud of the css, its a newspaper style css, since its a daily change for the picture i figured it'd fit if it were in the newspaper! its a cream background with black text, and the layout resembles somewhat a newspaper! It also has a random day button which selects a random day from 1995 to the current day, and displays the selected's picture and details!

INSANE CSS REWORK!!! Alright so i looked at a few other websites and i realized that all of them use a very similar theme. A dark background, maybe stars or smth, and i wanted to do something different. I took a different approach and themed it like a newspaper, a cream background, with black text and etc. This is probably my last devlog before my first ship. Im gonna work on the README now and thats it i guess!

API FETCHING ADDED!!!! Alright, so major update, the website is fully functional now, the API is called, and displays the details such as the picture, title and explanation. Also restructured the CSS on the site. Next im going to be thinking of a little twist of my own to the site, because we cant really fit in, can we? anyways, stay tuned for the next devlog lol.

FIRST DEVLOG!!!! Alright so its been tough so far, but its still really fun! I’ve made the HTML file, and i have my api, now im gonna work on using the api for data fetching. So theres a planet animation when fetching data, and im not sure what to name the site yet. The html file also consists of the css. Im planning on grinding it out for a few hours and finish this!

As I thought about ideas, I found myself constantly thinking about the problem that everyone deals with but never considers: choosing what to do next. From procrastination to boredom or from being indecisive to having too many options to pick from, making small decisions can end up taking more time than one would expect. And that is how **just tell me what to do** came to life.

The app poses a set of questions to users and based on their answers, makes an AI-suggested recommendation to do something specific next. Those questions include the amount of free time users have, their current state, and any limits they may have. My intention was not to create a new planning tool but rather to help remove the obstacle in making the first step and continue without additional delays.

Development was definitely far from being a straight road ahead. More often than not, my time was used to solve bugs rather than implementing new features. They included different behavior between AI models, unexpected failure of my API key, and an annoying UI bug when the to-do pile overlayed with its own popup.

The aspect which I am most proud of is the very idea itself. This is the problem that I myself faced, and many other people, I presume, must have had their experiences as well. Rather than just creating another productivity app, I have wanted to make something that would be practical for someone's daily routine. Even if the app will help save just a few minutes, it would already mean a lot.

Moreover, this project gave me an opportunity to practice debugging and using the API of an AI. Each of the problems that I managed to solve added to my knowledge, and at the end of the project, I knew a lot more about frontend and using an AI in the project.

All in all, **just tell me what to do** has turned out to be one of those projects which was very easy at first but proved to be rather challenging in practice. I am glad that I made it till the end despite all the bugs and came up with something practical.

FINAL DEVLOGGGGGG, I encountered way too many bugs deleting my .env file. it was PAINFUL. Finally fixed and im gonna ship the project!!!!!!! Huge new feature added, i call it the to-do pile. Your last 5 actions show up on it, and a button thats clickable saying “did it,” as soon as you click it, the action dissappears from the to-do pile! Its been really fun working on this site!

FINISHED BUG FIXING!!!! That took way too long. Devlog #2. Alright so now i’ve fixed the major prompting issue, you can finally talk to the ai without it bringing up additional math pass rates. 😅 I figured i’d host it on OnRender since im used to it. Added environment variables instead of the .env since its not testing anymore. Rebuilt the UI slightly. Worked on it all day. Theres a share option now, which copies the text instantly (incase you want to put it on your notes/to-do-list) Hoping i face no major bugs, please check out the site and let me know if theres bugs! (you can drop a comment or wtv) Added some nice translucent/glassy ui aswell. Not sure what’s next but lets see!

First Devlog, i thought of one of the biggest problems in daily life, decision making. Im sure every one of us has faced this ATLEAST once, if not hundreds and thousands of times. On average, roughly 2.5 hours is spent on indecisiveness by humans, may it be micro decisions or important decisions. This led me to making, “just tell me what to do,” a website thats AI-Powered and helps you get your thoughts straight and come to a decision. I’ve made the first version, its not being hosted anywhere yet due to major bugs, but hopefully by my second devlog i will have started hosting it.

the mission said build a personal website. i didn't want to do the usual thing, a page with my name, a list of projects, some links. that's boring and nobody actually reads it. i wanted something where you actually have to explore to find out who i am. so instead of a website about me, i made an OS that feels like mine. live like rino.
you boot in, pick a wallpaper from 8 presets, then land on a full desktop with a dock, draggable and resizable windows, a top bar with a live clock, and a right click menu on the desktop. there's a guide app that walks you through how to get around, a sticky notes app you can actually type in, and a jarvis terminal where you type commands like "hey jarvis, open projects" and it actually does it.
the windows have all three buttons working, red closes, yellow minimizes the window into a tray tile next to the dock, green fullscreens it. everything is one single html file, no frameworks, no libraries, no backend.
what was challenging:
a lot of small things that looked easy and weren't. getting window drag and resize to not fight each other took a while. the guide hint bubble was floating to the wrong spot because a css transform on the dock was silently breaking position fixed for anything inside it, took actual debugging to figure that one out. the boot bar looked smooth in code but felt jittery visually, ended up rewriting it with requestAnimationFrame timed against actual elapsed time instead of random setInterval increments.
what i'm proud of:
it actually feels like an OS. the boot sequence, the wallpaper picker before you even see the desktop, the tray for minimized windows, the way the guide hint pops up and points at the right icon. none of that was in the original mission brief, i just kept adding things because it didn't feel done yet.
to test it:
wait for it to boot, pick any wallpaper, click around the dock. right click the empty desktop for shortcuts. open the terminal and try "hey jarvis, help" to see what it can do. if you want to see the projects window, click the folder icon or say "hey jarvis, open projects."

Last thing before this is finished. Added an actual learning guide for the OS, rather than having to figure it out by trial and error.
There’s now a Guide app, with a teal icon located at the start of the dock. It launches into a window that takes you through all the basics, like opening applications, resizing and moving windows, what the three buttons for windows do, the context menu, talking to Jarvis in the terminal. When you first land on the desktop, a tooltip will pop up that shows you where the Guide icon is, and says “New here? Click Guide to get to know the OS.” Also, I added the context menu on the desktop. Just do a right-click on any empty space on your desktop and there will be quick access to such things as opening terminal, creating a sticky note, opening guides, changing wallpapers. However, you won’t see this menu when you perform the same action over an opened application, it is only visible on an empty desktop. I had to deal with some bugs that not many people are even going to notice, but which were crucial for my program. After I implemented the resizing functionality, the dragging became somewhat slow, which resulted from a css transition intended only for maximizing an application being applied to dragging and resizing as well. and there was another issue with the hint bubble being pointed to the guide icon. That one was a strange one, it turned out that a transform on the dock’s container element broke the position:fixed styling of everything within it, so the bubble was aligning itself to the center of the dock rather than the screen. Moved it outside of it and it now perfectly aligns with the icon, double checked on different screen sizes.
Finally, the boot sequence needed some work too. The animation itself was smooth enough, but at the total duration of 2.6 seconds, it just felt like skipping through rather than loading 5 messages. Slowed it down to about 4 seconds and added a smooth crossfade in between each message instead of the abrupt change, and now it feels like an actual boot sequence, not just random colors.
That is all I have for now for rinoOS. Boot up, choose a background, click around, talk to jarvis when bored.
Live the rino life 🟣

picking up from devlog #1. last time the three window buttons just sat there doing nothing, red worked but yellow and green were dead weight. fixed that.minimize now actually minimizes. click yellow and the window shrinks down and tucks itself into a little tray right next to the dock, like a real taskbar. click the tile and it pops back open exactly where it was.fullscreen works too. green button blows the window up to fill the whole desktop, click again and it snaps back to wherever it was sitting before. sticky notes is finally here. it’s its own app in the dock now, click the + tile and a new note shows up, type whatever, delete it with the x in the corner. they’re scattered at slight angles so it actually looks like sticky notes and not a grid.also made every window resizable from the bottom right corner, figured if you’re gonna explore my OS you should be able to make a window bigger to actually read stuff instead of squinting. ran into one annoying bug along the way: dragging windows around started feeling laggy and weird after i added resizing, turned out a css transition meant only for the maximize animation was quietly applying to every drag and resize too, so windows were animating toward your cursor instead of just following it. fixed by only turning that transition on for the maximize snap and keeping drag/resize completely instant. one more update coming next.
