This is Hackpad 6x, a custom QMK-powered macropad designed to pack a large number of functions into a small number of inputs. It uses 8 mechanical keys, a rotary encoder, OLED display, RGB lighting, and multiple profiles to act as a flexible desktop control device.
The goal was to create an “infinite keys” style macropad, where profiles allow the same buttons to be used for different purposes such as media controls, desktop shortcuts or game controls. It also includes a PC telemetry system that sends CPU usage, GPU usage, volume, and brightness information from a computer to the OLED display over USB.
I am most proud of creating a complete device from scratch. Instead of modifying an existing macropad, I designed the PCB, case, firmware, and supporting software myself. The PC telemetry feature is also something I am especially proud of, as it extends the macropad beyond normal inputs and turns it into a small information display :)
Something quite difficult with this project was making sure the code compiled with my limited C knowledge. It did take a while, and was mildly infuriating at the time, but I feel great knowing that I overcame that issue and made a working code!
The Hackpad 6x firmware and software are ready for use. Once assembled, the different profiles, key mappings, rotary encoder controls, OLED graphics, PC telemetry features, and RGB lighting effects should all be functional.
The project has reached the final design stage, with the CAD model, PCB, firmware, and supporting software completed. The physical build will take place once the required components arrive, so this demonstration focuses on the completed design and the functionality of the final device.
