- DevLog #9: Checkpoint Hardening & Stage 5 GNN Kinematics Convergence *
This session was focused on a deep technical milestone: diagnosing a critical engine staging bug in LUNAR-HAL and driving the Stellar GNN-kinematics pipeline through the completion of Stage 5.
1. 🛠️ Staging Architecture & Atomic Checkpoint RCA (Rust)
- Diagnosed and resolved a critical issue in the
--resumeworkflow where staging logic triggered a self-copy (src == dst), truncating output checkpoint weights upon restart. - Implemented robust canonical path checking (
std::fs: :canonicalize) to ensure fully atomic weight persistence across interruption signals (SIGINT/SIGTERM). - Hardened checkpoint state serialization, eliminating filesystem race conditions during runtime hot-reloads.
2. Stage 5: GNN-Kinematics Training
- Executed the 200-epoch training run for the galactic velocity prediction model ($v_x, v_y, v_z$ derived from positions + photometry).
- Validated host telemetry: stable VRAM footprint on local NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 (~3.1 GB / 12 GB allocated) with optimal throughput (~30s / epoch).
3. Loss & Convergence Verification
-
Train Loss: Decreased to
~0.7660. -
Validation Loss: Reached a clean, stable quasi-stationary plateau at
~0.7694. -
Physics Constraint: Invariant equilibrium maintained throughout (
phys_loss ≈ 0.7700), demonstrating high generalization without overfitting.
