Stardance is run by Hack Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for teens. We collect the minimum information we need to run the program safely and ship prizes to the right places.
Birthday
Stardance is built specifically for teens aged 13–18. Your birthday lets us confirm you're in that range and apply the right protections. For example, accounts under 13 aren't allowed under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
We use your birthday for eligibility checks. It doesn't appear on your profile and we don't share it outside the program.
Region
We collect your region for the purposes of our shop: different prizes are available in different parts of the world, and some items can't legally be shipped everywhere. Knowing your region up front means the things you see in the shop are things you can actually earn and receive.
Address (when you ship a project)
When you ship your first project, we'll ask for your address. There are two reasons:
- For nonprofit recordkeeping and compliance. Hack Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means the IRS requires us to document that the value we give out is reaching specific, identifiable recipients, not looping back inside the organization. US anti-terrorism and sanctions laws also require nonprofits to verify that grants and prizes aren't going to sanctioned individuals or regions. Keeping your address on file is part of that paper trail.
- So we can send you prizes. When you redeem Stardust for prizes, we need your address: both for physical items we mail to you, and for non-physical rewards like grant cards. (Grant cards are issued through HCB, which requires a cardholder address to help prevent fraud.)
- Share future Hack Club programs with you, like when we're organizing a hackathon in your city!
That's the whole list. Hack Club is a charity supported by donations, and we don't sell your address or personal data to companies.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your data.
- We don't run ads on Stardance.
- Your info never leaves Hack Club. The only people who can see it are the program team, all of whom are under a Hack Club NDA. No other teens, no partners, no external services.
